Maternal and Child Health
Women, and especially mothers, play a vital role in the community in Africa. They are responsible for nurturing children, caring for the sick, digging the fields to produce food, running the everyday household activities and connecting people in their villages through social and other networks. Positive Aid recognises the great workloads that women take on, and also the opportunities that women have to make changes in their villages. It is vital that mothers are healthy so that they can look after themselves, their children and their community - that‘s why we focus on empowering them. Through the project our community health workers refer pregnant women to support clubs that we‘ve established all over, to teach the women more about health, how to look after themselves during and after pregnancy, and connect them with the health services they may need. We also provide birthing supplies and transport so that they are able to reach a health facility to give birth when the time comes, and avoid the risk of complications giving birth in the village. When they attend ante-natal classes and give birth in a facility they are also able to prevent their babies being infected with HIV. By connecting these women to services and building their knowledge, the whole community benefits in turn.
